New Corridor Burgee

A productive work day on the new boathouse corridor ended with a painted version of the club burgee.
2012 Club Membership Due Now
Forth Canoe Club 2012 membership is now due, if you want to continue to paddle with Forth you will need to renew, we don't want to lose you!
You can renew by going to the membership page and
logging in and filling in the form.
Unfortunately the web server cannot currently send out email so for
new accounts, password reset and subscription confirmation, please
email the website editor and ask.
The membership costs are the same for 2012 as last year.
This year, we are required by the Scottish Canoe Association to
collect some additional data. This is your date of birth (even for
over 18s), gender, confirmation you accept the FCC Child Protection
Policy and whether you agree to receiving communications from the SCA.
You can also print out a form from the website or pick one up from the
boathouse and send me the money, cheques to 'Forth Canoe Club'.
Any key holders not renewing their key will need to return it.
Any questions please ask Jonathan.
New Constituation
The new club constitution is available on our documents page. Thanks to all who helped writing it.
Tay Descent Fun

We had a good showing at the Tay Descent (and Paddle 2011 exhibition) with our racers and tourers successfully completing the marathon trip. We might not have won any of the medals but we did put in the best performance of any club at the ceilidh.
Polo Success

Forth Canoe Club won 4 out of our 5 games at the polo league on Sunday, the trophies are in sight.

Bath Sessions
Bath Sessions are open for bookings to learn rescues and rolls in a warm swimming pool.

FCC Edinburgh Marathon 2011
Our annual marathon ran well in its new location. Marcus oversaw the running of the event starting at Meggetland with circuits to the lifting bridge and back to the aqueduct.
The short race was won by our own Ollie C. In the long Poppy was the first woman competitor. In the lightnings Rachel took second place and was first woman. Richard won the under 10s with Iain getting a bronze medal and Douglas and Henning not far behind.

Junior Slalom Training
We're looking to start up some slalom training. All welcome, junior focused but adults welcome too. 18:00 at the boathouse on Tuesdays.
Edinburgh Marathon: Register Now and Helpers Needed
Forth CC is organising the Edinburgh Marathon, a canoe race on the canal for all paddlers. This event replaces the Ratho East Marathon. There are a range of distances to suit all abilities and ages.

Edinburgh Canal Festival
Edinburgh Canal Festival, Saturday 9th July
This will be our 3rd year at the Edinburgh Canal Festival - come and join
in a wonderful community event! There'll be lots of fun things going on!

Scottish Schools Slalom
Forth had a strong showing at the Scottish Schools slalom in Alva. Lois won the Div 4 women and got promoted to Div 3. Bradley won the J16 in the men's K1 while Michael and Jonny were not far behind. Bradley also came in second partnered with and Jonny in the C2. Helen came second in the J16 women. Sam and Emily alas missed out on prizes but will be training hard to win them next year.
Polo news
Forth Canoe Club came third overall in the Scottish Polo League's Division 3 events, which concluded on May 23rd. The team were very pleased since we only began playing at the end of 2010.

Surf Champion
Forth's Neil Baxter won the Scottish Surf Kayak Championships last weekend. Well done Neil!
Double Win at Fairnilee
Club paddler Sam won both days in the Div 2 K1 men competition. Congratulations Sam.
Michael came in third in the judges while our other judges paddler won a fish award.

After School Coach Wanted

2011 Membership Now Open

Forth CC Coach Wins Coach of the Year Award
Sportscotland has awarded Forth CC sprint coach Kristina Medovcikova their Development Coach of the Year 2010 award. Kristina works for the SCA at several clubs in Scotland and has increased participation in sprint massively.

BBC Adventure Show
The Scottish Champs slalom at Grandtully is the focus of this week's BBC Adventure Show available for viewing until next Sunday. It features Forth paddlers Bradley, David F and Stuart with comments from coach David D. Stuart Pitt also updates us on SCA plans for an artificial slalom course in Leith.
November Committee Meeting Minutes
Minutes from the November committee meeting are now up.
New Polo Kit Arrives
Earlier this week we took delivery of a new set of helmets and bhoyancy aids for the polo team who will be competing on Sunday in the league. We also received a boat salvaged by George Spittal which is currently being repaired ready for use by the polo team, many thanks to George.
In other equipment news Kristina has a new canoeing ergometer at the Boroughmuir gym for her training. We also bought a Pyranha Fusion kayak for use at pool sessions over the winter and on the canal in warmer months.
Sun and Prizes on the Tay Descent
The Tay Descent had over 400 paddlers racing and touring from Dunkeld to Perth. Forth CC had a good showing with paddlers in every category. Congratulations to Olly C who won the short course race, and well done to Jack and Poppy who came not far behind. Annemarie won the medium touring and the Leaver/Berry family won the short course touring.

September Committee Meeting Minutes Available

Team Members wanted for Polo Team
Forth Canoe Club has entered into div. 3 which has three tournaments happening over the next couple of months: 28th Nov, 9th Jan and 20th Feb. If you want to take part, let me know by the end of the week
(26th September); there's 10 spaces and we need at least 5 people for a team, so you don't need to be able to make all the tournament dates. Also-there will be a couple of practice sessions before each tournament, so you don't need to have played before either. The cost for this will be £5 per tournament.

We have booked the pool at Portobello High School again for Bath Sessions to learn rolling and other skills in warm water. Bookings are being taken now.

Grandtully Slalom Over

Our annual Div 1/2 slalom has been successfully completed for another year. Many thanks to David Dickson for running the event.
We had a strong showing of paddlers with Stuart taking the prize for the C2s and Sam taking the J18 prize in the Div 2 K1 Men. Michael, Poppy and Helen all continue to climb the ranks of Div 1.
We ran a café serving out over 200 burgers and 400 rashers of bacon for the hungry competitors.

Jonny Promoted to Div 1

Forth CC paddler Jonny D has become the youngest paddler in Division 1 slalom, promoted last weekend at Fairnilee.
Bradley won the C1 competition as well as the Officials in his K1 and is expected to make top 20 rankings in Premier Division this year.
So far this year Michael, Poppy, Helen and Jonny have all gained promotion to Division 1 and meet the criteria for selection to the national squad.
Ratho East Marathon Details Announced
Details have been announced for the Ratho East Marathon. There are four courses to pick from. Please send in your entry early to help the organiser. Print off the competition poster for display at your canoe club.
Level 2 Coach Needed

Glasgow Green Marathon Trophies

The Forth CC trophy shelf gained some extra weight last weekend as Rachel won the Under 10s, Richard won the Under 8s and Ollie won the Juniors.
Tay Descent Video, Staring FCC's Finest
The SCA are running a major new event, the Tay Descent, in October alongside the Paddle exhibition. This promotional video was filmed last month and stars several paddlers from Forth CC.

Four canoe clubs around the area met at Seacliff beach for a day of paddling, surfing and barbecue. See the photos.
Slalom Success at Fairnilee
Last month several Forth paddlers went to the slalom at Fairnilee. Jonny got 3 or 4 trophies: British U12, 3rd place in Div2, and 'The Trophy for Most improved' Helen came 2nd in Div 2. Bradley was 3rd in the Junior Championships. Michael 1st in Div2 and promoted. And Davie Dickson himself won the Vets championships!
Edinburgh's Festival of Sport

We'll be running taster sessions by our boathouse at Harrison Park on Saturday June 12th from 13:00 to 18:00. This is part of Edinburgh's Festival of Sport. All welcome, just turn and up we'll get you started with paddling.
FCC Committee Meetings
Minutes are up for the February committee meeting.
Boathouse keys won't be changed for 2010 but renewal or return is required for all key holders.
Club boat hire can be payed in advance for a whole year instead of the usual £2 a time charge. £60 for anyone competing for Forth, £120 for non-competitors. Pay the treasurer.
Everyone is reminded to sign the diary when accessing the boathouse.
At the May committee meeting we decided to restructure club nights. Starting in June we will hold sessions for beginner and inexperienced juniors and seniors in 4 week blocks. Pre-booking is required. See club nights page for information. The last "open" club night will be May 20th.
Forth Polo Team Plays for the First Time
Forth's first polo team in many a year were invited to play as a last minute substitution in the Scottish division. In our first ever game we beat our adversaries from Strathclyde. Teams from Aberdeen and Lochwinnoch proved more fierce competition. Thanks to Theresa for her organising enthusiasm.

Glasgow to Edinburgh Marathon Open for Entries
The Glasgow to Edinburgh marathon is open to entries. This is a two day event along the canals of the central belt for both serious and fun racers. See Glasgow to Edinburgh Canal Challenge leaflet for more details.
Sports Relief: Neil Baxter takes BBC Presenters Along the Caledonian Canal

Edinburgh paddler Neil Baxter has taken BBC Scotland presenters Fred MacAulay and Dougie Vipond along the complete length of the Caledonian Canal for Sports Relief. Up a Long Creek will be broadcast on Wednesday 17th March 2010 at 21:00, BBC One Scotland. See the Up a Long Creek programme page for pre-trip interviews.

Success at the Whitewater Races
Forth had success at last weekends whitewater races on the Tay. Jonathan won the MK1 Division B gaining promotion to Division A while Cynthia retained her title as Scottish Womans Champion.
2010 Membership Subscriptions Now Open
Membership subscriptions for 2010 are now due. Prices are unchanged from last year. You can find instructions on how to sign up on the membership page.
Slalom and Sprint Coaching Module Courses
In the spring, the SCA is hosting a series of BCU discipline-specific modules for both Slalom and Sprint. These full-day modules are designed to provide coaches with the additional knowledge to deliver coaching in the disciplines and will be delivered at a subsidised rate to candidates thanks to Sportscotland funding.
The Slalom workshops will take place on 13th February (Inverness) and 14th February (Stirling Uni), with the Sprint modules taking place the following month on 13th March (Aberdeen Boat Club and 14th March (Low Port Centre, Linlithgow).
Sprint in 2009
Our sprint paddlers had a successful 2009 guided by our coach Kristina. At the Scottish champs we had 15 paddlers and took 7 gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze medals. We had three paddlers at the British champs and came in 6th in K2 500m, 5th in K4 500m and 5th again in the K4 1000m.
Fitness sessions are ongoing over the winter, contact Kristina if you are interested. Lightning sessions will start again in the Spring.
2009 AGM on January 20th
The (delayed) Annual General Meeting for 2009 will be on Wednesday January 20th 2010 at 19:30 in the Ettrick hotel. See a map.
Winter Paddling
It might be 10 degrees below zero but that doesn't mean the paddling has to stop.
Forth on BBC News
Forth Canoe Club was on BBC News again. Club paddlers David Florence and Stuart Pitt were discussing their hopes for an artificial whitewater course in Scotland to help bring slalom training facilities in line with those in other countries.
Slalom Success in 2009
Forth has had another successful year in slalom competition. Jonny was 3rd in the under 12 british champions at Fairnilee and has been promoted to division 2, the youngest paddler in the division. Michael won the J16 Scottish champs at Grandtully. Poppy won the division 3 women's event down in Manchester.Bradley was British under 14 champion at Fairnilee and Scottish under 16 champion. Helen won division 4 earlier in the year and then won the division 3 at Alva.
The Fox Found
Much loved plastic slalom boat the Fox was lost on the river Ericht some weeks ago following a capsise north of Blairgowrie. It disappeared without trace until kind fisherman Moray picked it up last week 10 miles downstream and full of mud in the River Isla. Many thanks to Moray for taking it home and contacting us.
Dean Village Death Drop
Ben, Jonathan and Teresa went for a canoe down the water of Leith including the weirs which attracted a large audience of passers by.
Winter Fitness Sessions at Forth CC
Sprint coach Kristina will be running winter fitness sessions from 26 October 2009 to mid March 2010. Come along to keep yourself in shape over the cold months.

Rapids Tamed at Wet West Paddle Fest
Forth made its first showing at the Wet West Paddle Fest when Jonathan and Felix took to the River Garry and River Morriston along with some 200 other canoeists. The Garry provided plenty of surfing practice while the Morriston was a roller coaster ride. The event provided many chances for both paddlers to practice their rolling skills. Grandtully Slalom Win for Forth
Forth Canoe Club ran our annual Division 1 & 2 slalom at Grandtully at the end of August. We were kept busy with a large number of entries. Competitors from Forth put in an impressive performance with Bradley getting 2nd place Div 1 K1 on Sunday and promoted to Premier Division, making him the youngest padder in Premier. Michael came in 4th place Div 2 K1 and was awarded 1st J18 on Saturday.

Loch Ard Adventure

Several paddlers from Forth went on an adventure to Loch Ard. We had lunch at the island bothy, seal launched off Duke Murdoch's Castle, explored Rob Roy's cave and discovered the source of the River Forth. See the photos.
Forth Paddlers Rock the Edinburgh Canal Festival

FCC made a big contribution to this year's Edinburgh Canal Festival which was a great success, despite the weather! Narrow boats plied up and down the canal all day, with passengers of all ages waving to passing craft and people on the towpath. We started off the day by joining the 'wee boats voyage', paddling from Harrison Park down to Lochrin Basin, together with hand-built craft (Canadian canoes, a currach and a coracle) made by community projects in the city.
Rat Race Polo at Forth

Forth's boathouse became a stage on the Edinburgh Rat Race this weekend. The Rat Race is a two hour race around the city including various challenges along the way. We introduced over 300 people to canoe polo, many of whom had never been in a boat before.
